It's 1942!

At War with Germany

Year 6 Trip visit to Beamish

Year 6 visited Beamish this week to kick start their theme of World War 2. We arrived at 10am and were taken by bus to the sun-soaked Hill Farm. We were greeted by Dan and Ian and informed we had been transported to 1942. England had been at war with Germany 3 years and many children and pregnant women were being evacuated to the country to reduce human casualties in the city. However, this wasn’t the only reason that operation “Pied Piper” had been called in to action. Children and women were needed to help run farms and support work in the countryside. Despite farming been a protected occupation (which meant that the men were not required to fight) many men were too patriotic and joined the army leaving the country needing helping in other ways. We learned about the jobs that some of the children did on the farm. Mucking out the animals, collecting eggs and milking the cows were all done before 6am and then there was still so much more to do. We learned about what happened during an air raid and we got to see an Anderson shelter… it’s a pretty small space. We also found out about rationing and some of us had a chance to bake a war time recipe – Carrot biscuits…DELICIOUS. We also got a chance to become soldiers and practice our “rifle” and marching skills. Our roars and cries of attack would frighten off the Germans… for certain. We had an amazing morning with Dan and Ian and after lunch ( where we made friends with a lovely goat) we further explore the 1940’s village.  We cant wait to carry on our learning at school and would like to say a massive thank you to Mrs Dewhirst and Mrs Green for their help during our visit.
